DPC Pre Conference Event (3 sessions)

4:00-5:30PM "Leveraging Personal Assets for Community Benefit" Workshop: In this workshop participants will reflect upon their personal assets and gain tools for effectively using them to persist in science. They will also increase their understanding of how their persistence in science can directly benefit the communities they come from and the Diversity Program Consortium for BUILD/NRMN trainees.

5:30 – 6:30PM "Building Social Capital in Science and within the Diversity Program Consortium" Mixer: Social capital can be defined as networks of people and community resources. We will build upon the existing social capital of participants to grow their scientific networks, particularly within the BUILD/NRMN/SACNAS communities.

6:30 – 8:30PM "Sharing your SACNISTA/BUILD/NRMN Voice" Activity: Spoken word is a performance art that enables the speaker to share their views for multiple reasons, including to influence change. In this activity participants will reflect upon their own experiences with the predominant culture of science. The activity will focus on working together to develop a spoken word piece that can be used to influence positive change and enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce.
